Swimming lessons: what happens when my little Nemo starts school?

You’ve not long found out which school your little Nemo will be going to in September. You’re probably wondering how on earth they grew up so quickly – we mean, how can they possibly be starting big kid school in just a few months?! You are probably also starting to think about how you’re going to fit in activities like swimming once September comes – after all, the Nemo Swimming class that you attend now might not be suitable once you have to fit everything around school hours.

So, what happens?

We know that starting school is a big step and you will have a million-and-one things on your mind right now. So, you’ll be pleased to know that, when it comes to your swimming lessons, we’ve got you covered!

When they start school, your little Nemo will be able to join our Nemo Juniors classes (note that in Newcastle and North Tyneside, these are delivered by our friends at SwimNE). These classes form the next step on our Nemo Swimming Journey and are specifically designed for school-aged children. The classes will see them work through stages 1-10 (and beyond!) and it’s here that your little Nemo will start learning the different swimming strokes, more advanced swimming skills and continue to build their strength, confidence and stamina in the water.

Continuing your learn to swim journey once you start school is easy with Nemo Swimming

What do I need to do?

In a word… nothing! At least, not quite yet…

Our support team has an up-to-date list of each and every little Nemo who will be starting school in September. And, as we approach the end of the summer term, you’ll start receiving emails from us (in fact, you might have had some already!) telling you what will happen to your little Nemo’s swimming classes once the put on that school uniform and become a fully-fledged reception kid (how exciting!).

These emails will either:

  • Tell you that, come September, your child will move over to Nemo Juniors (or SwimNE, if you’re in Newcastle or North Tyneside) classes.
  • Recommend that your little Nemo stays in a Nemo Pre-school class for a little while longer (usually a term or so). If this is the case, we will make sure they are in a suitable evening or weekend session.

We make these decisions based on your little Nemo’s age, ability, confidence in the water, listening skills, and various other things – trust us when we say that we put a lot of thought into this, and we make our recommendations based on what feel is best for your child.

Will these swimming classes by on the evening or weekend?

Yes. Once your child is at school, you’ll find a wide range of swimming classes that they can attend in the evening and on the weekends.

Starting school is a super-exciting step, and also one that comes with lots of questions! When it comes to your swimming lessons, we make it super-easy for you and your child

How do I organise to move to a new swimming class?

We’ll take care of everything for you.

As mentioned above, you’ll soon receive – if you haven’t already – an email outlining our plans for your little Nemo for September onwards.

As we get closer to the summer, you will start receiving invites to join suitable classes – we will provide you with options that are appropriate for your child’s age and swimming ability.

At this time, we will also provide further information about any other steps that you need to take. Don’t worry, though, as we make the process super easy for you.

Phew! Is there anything else I need to do?

Not at this stage. We will be in touch ahead of September to ensure your child is enrolled in a suitable swimming class. Don’t panic if you don’t hear from us until July or August – you will hear from us, and we have everything in hand.

Of course, if you do have any questions in the meantime, simply get in touch and we will be happy to help!
